When it comes to dog food, we don’t take switching lightly. Delilah just had her 10th(!) birthday last month and we have only switched foods twice during this fabulous decade.
Like most dogs, she’s not a particularly picky eater, especially when it comes to following the kids around waiting for them to drop something on the floor. It’s just that we have always believed that feeding your dog quality dog food is one of the most important things you can do.
For the most part, we were happy with Delilah’s food. We gladly made the trip across town to the only store that sold it and we were happy to keep doing so, knowing we were spending more than most of our friends to provide her with quality ingredients. But when we heard about AvoDerm Natural, it made us seriously think about switching. Not only was it grain free (something we consider a requirement), but our attention was drawn to AvoDerm’s use of avocados to make their food. It’s also made in California and they have high quality control standards.
Long story, short. . . we made the switch and I’m here to tell you all about it. Spoiler alert: We are happy and Delilah’s happy too. We’ll get to all that, but first some background on AvoDerm.
What is AvoDerm Natural?
AvoDerm Natural is a premium dog food that uses California avocados as their main ingredient. California avocados are key ingredients in AvoDerm products because they’re bursting with a lot of the nutrients that your pet needs – it’s an all in one superfood.
Now I’m not a scientist, but basically avocados are nutrient boosters that will help your dog absorb more of the nutrients they need. Aside from avocados, AvoDerm Natural includes meat proteins, fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants and wholesome grains.

Who Makes AvoDerm and Where is it Made
Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods makes AvoDerm. The company has been running for 71 years in Irwindale, California. Their famous tagline “Good Health Shows”, is reflected through their high-quality pet foods. They made their mark when the AvoDerm Natural dog food line became the company’s best-selling products since its debut in 1982.
All dry foods are made in the USA in AvoDerm’s company plant in California. They are very careful in selecting their suppliers to ensure that only the highest-quality California avocados go into each bag and can of AvoDerm Natural food. That’s no easy feat, considering I can barely pick a good avocado at the grocery store.
All ingredients are tested before being accepted into their facilities. They make their food in small batches. Cooking them at low temperatures helps support better digestion and health for your dog.
Avocados help support a healthy skin and beautiful coat of your dog. Nutrient-dense and rich in fiber, avocados are rich in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. That is why they are known as super fruits. Feeding your dog AvoDerm Natural products will make them feel and look better.
AvoDerm products are perfect for your dogs who have certain health problems. Avocados are full of antioxidants and nearly 20 vitamins and minerals. This can reduce food allergies and sensitivities due to no corn/fillers, no wheat, no soy, no artificial preservatives, and no animal by-product meals.

Our Dog’s AvoDerm Natural Experience
Like I said, Delilah is not necessarily a picky eater, but she does not tolerate lower quality dog food well. After we did the research on AvoDerm Natural, we weren’t too concerned because they seemed to use quality ingredients and have high standards.
When we received our first bag, we were not disappointed. On opening the bag, it was immediately apparent that the food was fresh and of high quality. In fact, it seemed fresher and denser than her previous food.
I took this picture before feeding her tonight. I don’t know if this picture does it justice, but the kibble is dense and well made.
In case you didn’t know, you should never abruptly switch foods on your dog. You need to transition them slowly into the new food. AvoDerm Natural has their suggested transition, which we followed.
How to Switch Your Dog’s Food to AvoDerm Natural
Switching your pet food requires a slow method. Never rush your dog if they are not ready yet. It is very important to avoid disrupting your pet’s digestive pattern because it can cause vomiting or diarrhea.
Use this 5-day transition instruction to help your dog begin eating AvoDerm products.
Day 1 & 2 – feed your dog at least 20 percent of AvoDerm products and 80 percent of the old brand.
Day 3 & 4 – feed your dog with half of the AvoDerm products and the remaining half with the old brand.
Day 5 – feed your dog with 80 percent of AvoDerm products and 20 percent of the old brand.
Day 6 – feed your dog 100 percent AvoDerm products.
After the Switch
We followed the plan and gradually switched Delilah over to AvoDerm. She didn’t have any problems adjusting. The food was denser, so she ate a bit more slowly. Overall the switch has been amazing.
She really enjoys the food and we have seen some key differences. Her coat definitely seems shinier and healthier. I think her skin is better as well. She seems to itch less and we haven’t seen her licking her paws since the switch.
Honestly, I’m surprised to see such a change, especially since she was eating fairly high quality dog food before. I think it says a lot for the quality of AvoDerm Natural dog food.
Here’s Delilah in a post-meal glow, voicing her approval:
Feeding your dog the right food is one of the most important things you can do as a dog owner. It’s good to spend some time researching the food and making sure it’s high quality. We did that with AvoDerm and all the information was really positive.
The best part is that the food lived up to the hype and we are very happy that we made the switch. Not only does she love it, but we have the peace of mind knowing that she is getting quality made food with amazing ingredients.
