Hooray! You have a new puppy! After the initial excitement, you might be wondering how to train your adorable new pup. We’re here to give you a shocking bit of advice: Skip puppy training class!
I know, I know…. You’re saying,”But how will my little baby learn to sit and stay and do that little trick where he covers his eyes?!?!”
There’s a lot of talk about how to raise your puppy. If you start researching and talking to other people you will drown in a bunch of useless details. Soon you’ll be hung up about going to puppy school to learn stern commands and having a dog that will stand stone cold still while a rabbit holding a T-bone steak walks in front of his nose.
Is that what your dream dog is like? Do you want a dog to impress your friends or to be an awesome companion?
I’m sure you have friends that show you how well behaved their dogs are. They show you all these tricks, but later on warn you to stay away from the dogs food bowl or tell you their dog isn’t good around kids. Yikes!
They have spent so much time on commands and tricks that they have forgotten about the important stuff. Why?
Because most dog trainers are stuck in the rut of doing the same thing everyone else is doing. It’s form over substance. Everyone follows the lead and never asks: Why?
Think about this. No dog is ever put to sleep for not sitting properly. Or because he didn’t stay the right way. Or because he couldn’t do the trick where he rolls on his back.
What does affect the lives of people and dogs more than anything? Aggression. More dogs are put to sleep for aggressive behavior than any other reason. Whether it’s growling or snapping, aggression toward children, strangers and even owners. It’s all bad. Aggressive dogs with no control are dangerous.
