If you’re looking for something unique to make for your dog or as a gift for a dog lover, a paracord dog collar is perfect. Here’s a DIY project even I can handle!
I came across these a few weeks ago and did some digging to learn how to do it. Here’s a quick rundown of how to make a paracord dog collar with links to some great how to resources.
In case you haven’t been hanging out at your local military surplus store, paracord is short for parachute cord. It is a lightweight nylon rope used with parachutes.
To make a paracord dog collar, you use paracord to weave the collar for your dog. Why? Because you can! And it’s a fun DIY project.
You say you don’t know how to weave? No worries, the nice people of the internet are here to show you!
One of the most popular weaves among all dog collars is the Cobra weave. This type is extensively used because of its strength and endurance especially if your dog is huge.
There are many sub-varieties of this type and King Cobra weave gives the ultimate strength for these collars. It can also add extra thickness and padding to the original weave, which means your dog is going to feel more comfortable with this type of collar.
The amount of paracord you need will depend on the size of collar you are making. For our example, we’ll make a 20 inch one. Adjust the size of the cord according to your pet’s size.
What you will have to do is make a slight adjustment to the measurement, that is, for every 1 inch of the collars you will need 1.5 feet of paracord.
A detailed supply list for the paracord dog collar is as below:

1) 550 paracord – 20 ft first color, 20ft second color
2) Plastic or safe metal buckle
3) Plastic or metal D-ring
Now, on to putting it all together!
Here’s the process broken down in 7 steps:
Step 1 – Join both pieces of different colored paracords to make one single cord. This is done by first trimming the ends at an angle and melting the end with the lighter. Press the ends together when they are hot to touch.
Step 2 – Fold the cord in half. Secure the cord to the buckle with a knot.
Step 3 – Set the size of the dog collar at this stage and tighten the other end of the cord to the buckle.
Step 4 – Use the D-ring on the other end of the collar until it is touching the buckle.
Step 5 – Start weaving the cord using the cobra weave technique. This is very similar to plaiting the hair.
Step 6 – Weave all the way down to the end of the collar. Turn the collar around and secure it to the buckle through the slot. Keep tthe collar as odo it.
Step 7 – Once the collar is weaved, the final step is to secure it as much as possible.make sure the collar is tight.
