Finding dog training advice isn’t hard. Finding gentle and humane dog training advice? That’s a different story.
That’s why I wanted to share these 3 secrets to dog training that don’t rely on cruelty or training “devices.”
People say they believe in humane dog training, but head over to Amazon and look at the best selling “dog training aids” and usually more than half will be shock collars or ultrasonic zappers.
Contact your local dog trainer and they might suggest something you’re not comfortable doing to your dog. In my case, we had a trainer who insisted our dog needed a metal prong collar.
You can train your dog humanely without all that stuff so why use it?
Sorry, rant over. Let’s get on to the 3 dog training secrets!
Whether your dog won’t stop barking, won’t come when called or still isn’t potty trained, the solution is the same.
It’s the same in that you just need to apply these three concepts and the rest will follow.
Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog.
The first is simple. You must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way.

When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions.
After all, you provide the food, the shelter and everything else your dog needs! Like the phrase or not, you need to be your dog’s Pack Leader.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to yell or strut around the house asserting your dominance. You can do it quietly by doing things that are pretty ordinary.
The best teaching example of this I have seen is with The dog trainer Doggy Dan. He sets out 5 golden rules to be your dog’s Pack Leader. You can check his site out at TheOnlineDogTrainer.com.
If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing.
If you want a dog that listens all of the time, then first win your dog’s mind.
The second key to success is to motivate your dog.
It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward.
If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.
Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve.
At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog.
The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.
The three main rewards are:
Your dog is always going to work harder if you are fair in your training.
Even if you do not want to use food you should make sure that you use affection accordingly when your dog does well
If you want to use food rewards then always follow these simple tips:
The third key to achieving perfection is practice. Learning how to encourage behavior that is closer to what you want than the last is the third key to success.
Again this is where rewards come in so handy! Motivate and then show your dog what it is that you want and there is no need for any negative training!
You don’t need shock collars or electric zappers to train your dog. You can train your dog in a gentle and humane way. Go use these 3 tips and start teaching your dog!
